Gregson’s new BBC commission
Edward Gregson is writing a new work for this season’s BBC Philharmonic series at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall. The BBC has commissioned a new work to go alongside Mahler’s Sixth Symphony for the Mahler Symphony Cycle which runs from January 2010 until June 2010 and is a collaboration between the BBC Philharmonic and Hallé orchestras.
The new work, entitled Dream Song, will be given its premiere at a concert on Saturday March 27, 2010 by the BBC Philharmonic under its Principal Conductor Gianandrea Noseda.
Dream Song is a 20 minute work for large orchestra, dramatic in structure and content. It uses …

Edward Gregon’s recent Saxophone Concerto is to be broadcast again on BBC Radio 3 on Wednesday 24 June on ‘Classical Collection’ at around 11.30am. The soloist is Nobuya Sugawa with the BBC Philharmonic under Clark Rundell. Edward Gregson has been commissioned by the Ida Carroll Trust to write a new work for string orchestra in memory of the Cheshire artist Dorothy Bradford who died in July last year aged 90.
The composer writes:
In looking for a particular painting from the artist’s considerable output on which to base my new work, I was drawn to one entitled Goddess (1980), unusual for the artist’s output in its subject matter. In a largely blue canvas it depicts a seemingly lonely reclining female figure – sensuous, beguiling, and preoccupied. I have written a slow movement which tries to capture …

Edward Gregson’s work for brass band, the Rococo Variations, is to be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 on the 5th March, 2009. This is part of Radio 3’s coverage of the Royal Northern College of Music’s Festival of Brass 2009.
