Edward Gregson’s newly orchestrated version of his Horn Concerto is to be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 next Monday 20 January at 3pm. The soloist is Paul Klein with the Ulster Orchestra conducted by Takuo Yuasa.

The Horn Concerto is the first of Gregson’s concertos, written in 1971 and originally scored for brass band. It has been widely performed in that version, but the composer has long wanted to arrange a version for orchestra. That was realised as a result of a request from Paul Klein, principal horn of the Ulster Orchestra, and BBC Northern Ireland, and it duly received its premiere in August 2013 at the Ulster Hall, Belfast.

The concerto has also just been recorded for a new Chandos disc, due out this July, with Richard Watkins and the BBC Philharmonic, conducted by Bramwell Tovey.
