Not surprisingly though, it is Cory Band’s triumphant performance of Edward Gregson’s Of Distant Memories that steals the show. From the opening bars, the playing radiates warmth and affection, matched by solo playing of remarkable consistency, and a level of technical synchronicity and sheer verve in the faster sections that takes the breath away. It’s difficult to imagine the composer’s heartfelt tribute to the masterworks of the repertoire being given greater musical credence than by this band, on this particular National Final day.
