German premiere for Gregson’s ‘A Song for Chris’

Edward Gregson’s Cello Concerto (A Song for Chris) received its German premiere to great acclaim last weekend In Pforzheim, Germany.  It was performed by soloist Li Wei Qin, with the South West German Chamber Orchestra conducted by Douglas Bostock.  Li Wei was the original soloist at the work’s world premiere in 2007, when he performed it with Manchester Camerata, conducted by Douglas Boyd at the RNCM Manchester International Cello Festival. The Festival commissioned the work, which was written in memory of Christopher Rowland, the College’s then Head of Chamber Music, and the inspirational teacher behind many of the …

Norwegian premiere of ‘The World Rejoicing’

The final set of performances of ‘The World Rejoicing’ will take place at Grieg Hall, Bergen, Norway, on Friday 10 February 2023. The work was commissioned as the set test piece for their national competitions by five European countries in 2019, but because of the pandemic all the national premieres were postponed for over two years. The world premiere eventually took place in the Netherlands in October 2021, followed by those in Switzerland, UK, and Belgium.

The World Rejoicing (Symphonic Variations on a Lutheran Chorale)

The World Rejoicing (Symphonic Variations on a Lutheran Chorale) has been declared the winner of ’Test Piece of the Year’ by the brass band website 4barsrest.com. The work also received the same award in 2021 for its performances in the Netherlands and Switzerland. It was chosen out of nine other nominated works.
