Gregson’s Romance for recorder and string quartet of 2003 revisits a work for clarinet and piano written nearly forty years earlier (though there is not the slightest hint of recycling) and reveals clear influence of the English romantics. It is in ternary form and a short cadenza leads to the recapitulation of the smooth opening phrases.
