From the Odessa Philharmonic...

In December 2007, Maestro Hobart Earle proposed to the Odessa Philharmonic Orchestra Tubist Victor Samoilenko that he play a concerto with the orchestra. Victor came to Maestro the very next day after rehearsal, with the solo part to Edward Gregson's concerto, which he had learned and recently played with a pianist in a piano reduction. PA to Hobart Earle, Anna Solodova, was given the task of writing to his friends, trumpeter John Wallace and tuba player Jim Gourlay, both in faraway Glasgow, Scotland, to ask them to help locate the composer, and see how the Odessa Philharmonic could go about finding the orchestral parts to the concerto.

Soon the OPO and Edward Gregson were in touch, and the parts were located in the Chester Music hire library in Bury St. Edmunds. The concert will take place with a guest conductor, Allin Vlassenko, from the National Opera of Ukraine, since Hobart Earle is on the road, away from Odessa at the time. This will be the first time a tuba concerto has be played by the orchestra in Odessa for many years.
